Ear Training "101"
What: In this class, you will begin the process of learning how to identify by ear the chord progressions in songs, and the notes that you hear in melodies. The ear training book we will use teaches through real songs from the pop, rock and jazz worlds, a more interesting approach than in the typical “dry” ear training texts. The focus of class time is on active student participation in working with song excerpts or doing other ear training exercises and drills.
Who: This course is appropriate for both instrumentalists (any instrument) and vocalists.
Why: Why should you be interested in ear training?
Ear training will greatly advance your instrumental skills and ability to make music. You will have a deeper understanding of the music you’re playing and be able to “hear” what’s coming two steps ahead. As a performer you’ll be more confident and better prepared to handle the music you play. You’ll be able to memorize music more quickly and easily. If you want to compose, arrange, transcribe, or improvise (in jazz, rock, etc.), ear training skills are indispensable. More generally, you will greatly improve your ability to listen to and appreciate music overall. Now are you interested?!
Why this class? In anonymously collected feedback, students in the Spring ‘09 session of this class collectively rated it 9.5 out of 10 (average rating).
When: 12-week session, meeting one hour per week. Maximum six people in the class. Fall 2009 session begins in late September. Exact date and time of the class to be determined based on student preferences.
Where: Paul’s home studio in Bethesda, located near NIH, 355, the Beltway and 270.
Cost: $225 for 12-week session (weekly one-hour classes). The Berklee book/CD set is $30.
Refund policy: Cancel before the class starts for a full refund, or withdraw at any time and receive a refund for the remaining sessions.
Prerequisites: Basic music theory “on paper”: ability to read music on the staff, knowledge of key signatures and major and minor scales. We can review these together at the start if desired, or I can catch some people up individually.
Access to a keyboard is helpful, though not required.
Instructor: Paul’s bio here. I taught a dedicated ear training and music theory course at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts for one year and have also taught it to private guitar students. I have decades of experience studying and employing ear training skills in jazz music.

Ear Training "102"
This is the follow-up 12-week session (again, one hour per week) for those who have taken Ear Training 101. If you already have some experience with ear training, it may be appropriate to skip ET 101 and start with this class. Contact Paul to discuss. You may be able to start with ET 102 if, for example, you can identify by ear the intervals in the major scale and some basic chord progressions (e.g. I-IV-V).
Location and cost are the same as above. Weekly date and time will be determined based on student preferences.
If interested, please contact Paul at 301-530-6034 or paul@paulbangser.com.
